Abstract

The aim of this research is to find the gender stereotype in Mulan movie and to identify masculine and feminine stereotype in this movie. Male portrayed assertiveness, independence, and leadership, while female portrayed weak, less assertive, emotional sensitivity, and affection. The object of this research is Disney’s animation movie, Mulan. This research is purposed to help the readers understanding about the gender and stereotype, and also the characterizations itself. This movie shows the woman’s power by the main character and how the main character breaks the gender stereotype in the movie. This research applied qualitative method, while the data were collected by identify the gender stereotype in Mulan movie. As the result, there are 19 data, 12 data are masculine and 7 are feminine stereotype. It can be concluded that although Mulan is a woman, she has more masculine characteristics than feminine, it is because Mulan’s condition and environment that makes her being like a man.
