Abstract

The aim of this research is to (1) determine the type of translation method used in translating the figurative language of the Brave movie subtitles taken from https://subscene.com. (2) analyzing the quality of figurative language translation in the subtitles of the Brave movie. The object data used in this study are 30 sentences containing figurative language taken from the subtitles of the movie. The method used in this research is qualitative. The research finding shows: (1) The 6 translation methods proposed by Hoed (2006), the translator uses 4 methods in translating 30 sentences containing figurative language, there are 3 cases of the exotic method (10%), 1 case of the cultural borrowing method (3%), 8 cases of the calque method (27%), and 18 cases of the communicative method. (2) In addition, the researcher assesses the quality of figurative language translation by applying the Nababan theory and, overall, the average score obtained is 2.57 with a score for each aspect, namely the accuracy aspect with an average score of 2.50, acceptability with an average score of 2.60, and readability with an average score of 2.70. The communicative method is the one most often used by the translator because of the effectiveness in the process of translating figurative language that contain figurative meaning from the source language into the target language. The translator prioritizes the delivery of messages from the source language into the target language so that the target language sounds more natural and understood by the reader. Overall, the quality of figurative language translation is still inaccurate, acceptable, and has a high level of readability.
