Abstract
In translating slang words, a translator needs to know the cultural background of the slang words based on their community. The lack of knowledge about the meaning of slang words will lead to misinterpretation. The aim of this research was to investigate the translation of slang words in the Fate of the Furious movie. The investigation includes finding the slang words itself and finding the subtitling process of how the translator translates the slang words into target text. The data were categorized based on two theories. First, the writer used the types of slang theory proposed by Sumarsono, and the second, subtitling strategies theory proposed by Gottlieb. This research used a qualitative method. The writer also used documentation technique of the data collection. The data were collected manually from the DVD of the Fate of the Furious movie. The result of this research show that there are four types of slang found in the Fate of the Furious movie. They are apocope, acronym, creativity and using the existing word. Furthermore, the translator used four subtitling strategies in translating slang words. They are paraphrase, transfer, imitation and condensation. This finding indicates that it is substantial to apply subtitling strategies in translating slang words to maintain the quality of viewers’ comprehension in reading the subtitle
