Abstract

This research aims to count the total number of words as types and words as tokens in the compound sentences because especially in English sentence, that will have difference. The main theory that the writer uses in this research is the theory from Andrew Carstairs and McCarthy in the book An Introduction to English Morphology. In this theory explained that to count the number of words only using single word, not a word based on the meaning in the dictionary. The theory also explains that if the word is repeated both in sound and letter, it is can be called as one type. The word which always repeat is the word in the determiner types such as "the" and "an / a". The main data source in this study is taken from the short story American "Rumpelstilskin" by Jacob and Wilhem Grimm. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive research in accordance with the theory from Steven J. Taylor, Robert Bogdan and Marjorif L. DeVault where this research uses media form short story America. The data that the writer took in this research are 20 data with percentage 46.6% as types and 53.4% as tokens. Meanwhile, for data collection techniques, the writer uses a documentation technique from Sugiyono.
