Abstract

Metaphor and Simile are two figures of speech which take two different things by comparing with one another. The use of metaphors and similes helps the speaker or writer to provide a clear picture through comparison or contrast. The author decided to analyze metaphors and similes using comparison tools such as like, as, as if and others in The Universe of Us. The research problem is focused on the types and meanings of metaphors and similes contained in The Universe of Us. This study aims to identify, classify, and analyze the forms and meanings of metaphors and similes in The Universe of Us. The method used in this research is quantitative method. In data collection, the authors focus on identifying words, phrases, or parts of sentences. The theory used by the author comes from Andrew Ortony for the simile and Mildred Larson for the metaphor. In terms of meaning, metaphor and simile have similarities and inequalities. The similarity in metaphor and simile is that the meaning of the two figures of speech has the element of comparing two objects and the difference between metaphor and simile is that metaphors do not use comparison words, but simile uses comparative words such as: like and as
