Abstract

In this research, the writer uses a neurolinguistics approach with the aim of knowing (1) the types of communication disorders, and (2) the causes of communication disorders. This research uses data sources taken from a documentary movie entitled 'Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down' released in 2020. In the documentary movie, it is known that the communication disorder experienced by Gabby Giffords was caused by aphasia which appeared after Gabby suffered a brain injury in her left hemisphere. This research method uses qualitative research methods. The main theory used is the theory of Owens et al (2015) for the types of communication disorders and Robb (2020) for the causes of communication disorders. There are 30 data found and show that Gabby Giffords has communication disorders of the types of disorder of fluency, disorder of content, disorder of form, disorder of use, and disorder of articulation. Meanwhile, it was found that the communication disorder was caused by Broca's aphasia, anomic aphasia, and Wernicke's aphasia. Keywords: communication disorders, aphasia, neurolinguistics
