Abstract
This study aims to explain the types and functions of imperative sentences found in the novel dialogue and to determine the types of translation procedures used in translating imperative sentences in the novel "The sun is also a star by Nicola Yoon and her Indonesian novel translated by Airien Kusumawardani. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method that focuses on the interpretation or understanding of the issue being studied. Data were collected using the technique of recording and analysing the translation of the novel. The analysis model used is the interwoven analysis model through the components of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions with verification. The results of this study indicate: that imperative sentences, 19 data (76%) are positive imperative sentences, while 6 data (24%) are negative imperative sentences. The functions of imperative sentences include, suggestions as many as 8 data (32%). Requests and suggestions are in second place with 5 data (20%) each, followed by prohibitions with 5 data (20%) and commands with 2 data (8%). Of the 7 translation procedures proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (2000), the translator translated 6 procedures in translating 25 imperative sentences, each in 13 cases (52%). Literal translation was used in 8 cases (32%). Lastly, borrowing, calque, modulation, and equivalence each had one case (4%). In general, it can be said that a natural language has translated the imperative sentences found in the dialogue of this novel and is easy to understand in the target language.
